In situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements of copper oxide are carried out. Changes in copper valence that occurs when copper oxide is reduced at elevated temperatures in a hydrogen atmosphere and in an oxygen atmosphere are investigated. The local structure around the copper atom is determined by performing extended XAFS (EXAFS) analysis of the spectra after the reduction and oxidation reactions.
