The bilateral workshop on “Bridging Research Innovations in Diverse muon and neutron science by GEneral collaboration between Japan and Switzerland” will be organized at Yayoi auditorium, University of Tokyo on October 20-22, 2025.

This workshop aims to promote academic exchange on experimental techniques in the fields of muon and neutron science and related areas between Japan and Switzerland. The first meeting (https://indico.psi.ch/event/14832/) was successfully held at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in October 2023. The second workshop is planned to be held at the University of Tokyo, with researchers invited from Switzerland.

The workshop will bring together representatives from two of the world’s leading high-intensity proton accelerator facilities—J-PARC and PSI—to discuss the current status, technical challenges, and future perspectives of experimental systems utilizing muon, neutron, and hadron beams. The program will consist of two days of presentations and discussions, followed by a one-day tour of the J-PARC facilities.

Both J-PARC and PSI operate high-intensity proton beamlines for muon and neutron production, and thus share many common technical challenges, such as target systems, beam transport lines, diagnostics, and component development in high-radiation environments. While bilateral exchanges between two institutes have taken place in specific areas such as targetry and beamlines, this workshop aims to foster more comprehensive and sustained collaboration among the two institutions and participating research groups from universities.

Unlike conventional research conferences that tend to focus on the presentation of successful results, this workshop will emphasize the sharing of practical knowledge, including technical difficulties, lessons learned, and iterative problem-solving processes. Through such open and in-depth technical exchanges, we aim to strengthen the foundation of future facility development and nurture the seeds of technological breakthroughs.
