A Brief History of RadSynch

RadSynch originated in 2001 as a satellite workshop of the biennial APS-ESRF-SPring-8 Three-way Meetings. Paul Berkvens of ESRF, P. K. Job of APS, and Yoshihiro Asano of SPring-8 established the series in response to requests for an international forum devoted to radiation physics, shielding design, and radiation safety at synchrotron radiation facilities. The first workshop was held at APS in April 2001, followed by meetings at ESRF in 2002 and SPring-8 in 2004.

The workshop began as major third-generation light sources entered successful operation and additional facilities were being planned. It brought radiation physicists, safety professionals, accelerator specialists, and engineers together to exchange operational experience and advances in shielding, radiation transport calculations, measurements, commissioning, and facility design. Although intentionally small, RadSynch became a unique international forum for these subjects. As accelerator-based photon sources evolved, its scope expanded. By RadSynch 2009, the workshop started to address radiological issues associated with free-electron laser facilities as well. Today, RadSynch remains a unique international forum for exchanging experience and advances in radiation physics, shielding design, and radiation safety at accelerator-based photon science facilities.
